AI DevOps Launch: Roll Out GitHub Copilot and GitLab Duo With Cost Control
We help engineering teams roll out AI coding tools with a budget you can predict, policies your security team will sign, and numbers that show whether it is working.
- GitHub Copilot
- GitLab Duo Agent Platform
- GitLab Select Partner
- Delivering since 1999
In short: AI coding tools are now billed by usage as well as by seat. Most companies turned them on without spending limits, usage policies or a baseline to measure against. AI DevOps Launch fixes that in three steps: review the spend, run a governed pilot, then scale what the data supports.
Why now
Both major platforms changed how AI is billed this year.
- GitHub Copilot. On June 1, 2026, GitHub moved all Copilot plans to usage-based billing with AI Credits. Seat prices did not change, but usage is now metered. The promotional extra credits ended after August 2026.
- GitLab Duo. GitLab introduced GitLab Credits, a usage-based model for the Duo Agent Platform, billed at $1 per credit used. The older Duo Pro and Duo Enterprise seat add-ons are no longer on GitLab’s pricing page, and existing contracts can convert to credits. Credits are now available on every plan, including Free.
The result is the same on both sides. Many teams now have AI tools with a cost that moves every month and governance that was never set up. Turning the tools on was the easy part. Controlling them and proving they pay off is the work.
Three ways to start
1. AI Readiness and Spend Review
Get your current AI spend under control.
- Audit Copilot and Duo usage, credit burn and seat utilization
- Set budget caps, model policies and admin controls
- Reclaim idle seats
You get: spend-control configuration and a one-page cost forecast.
2. Governed Pilot
Prove value with one or two teams (15 to 30 developers).
- Baseline metrics captured before rollout
- AI usage policy: IP, secrets, allowed repos, data handling
- SSO, audit logging and content exclusions
- Enablement workshops and prompt playbooks
You get: an executive readout with a go or no-go decision and a rollout plan.
3. Enterprise Rollout and Agent Workflows
Expand across the organization, with agents where the return is clear.
- Org-wide rollout built on the pilot results
- Agent use cases: CI failure triage, merge and pull request review, dependency and security fixes, test generation
- Ongoing metrics dashboard
- Optional quarterly optimization retainer
You get: AI working across your teams, with cost and results reported every month.
How it works
- AssessLook at what you are paying for, what is used and what is exposed. Put limits in place first.
- PilotMeasure a baseline, roll out to a small group with clear policy, and compare.
- ScaleExpand where the numbers support it. Add agent workflows where the return is clear.
What you get
An AI usage policy
Plain rules for IP, secrets, approved repositories, data handling and which models are allowed. Written to be signed by security and legal, and enforced in the platform settings where possible.
A metrics dashboard
Seat utilization, credit consumption and delivery metrics against the baseline. You see cost and results side by side, every month.
An executive readout
A short, evidence-based report: what changed, what it cost, and a clear go or no-go with a rollout plan.
Who it is for
- GitHub and GitLab customers who want AI coding tools with guardrails in place from day one.
- Teams evaluating AI that need evidence, not a vendor demo, before they commit.
- Companies already paying for Copilot or Duo who are not sure what they are getting for it, or where next month’s bill will land.
Why ReleaseTEAM
We resell, implement and support both GitHub and GitLab. That means one partner can handle licensing and rollout together: the right plan and seat count, the admin controls, the policy and the enablement.
We are a GitLab Select Partner. Select is GitLab’s invitation-only partner track, for partners making a greater investment in GitLab sales and services. We have been helping engineering organizations get the most from their DevOps tools since 1999. See our GitHub services and GitLab services, or read our GitLab Duo Agent Platform guide.
We do not promise a productivity percentage. Results vary by team, codebase and how the tools are used. We measure your baseline and report what actually changed.
Frequently asked questions
Do you work with both GitHub Copilot and GitLab Duo?
Yes. We resell and deliver services for both platforms, and many of our customers run both. The approach is the same on each: control the spend, set the policy, measure the results.
What changed in AI coding tool billing in 2026?
GitHub moved all Copilot plans to usage-based AI Credits billing on June 1, 2026. Seat prices stayed the same, but usage is now metered. GitLab introduced GitLab Credits for the Duo Agent Platform, billed by use, and made them available on every plan. On both platforms, cost now depends on how much the tools are used.
We already pay for Copilot or Duo. Where should we start?
With the AI Readiness and Spend Review. In one week we audit usage, credit burn and seat utilization, set budget caps and admin controls, and reclaim idle seats. You leave with the configuration in place and a one-page cost forecast.
Will you tell us how much faster our developers will be?
No. We do not sell a number. We capture a baseline before rollout and report what changed after, using your own delivery data. That is what goes in front of your executives.
What does the AI usage policy cover?
Intellectual property, secrets, which repositories AI tools may access, data handling and which models are allowed. Where the platform supports it, we enforce the policy in settings such as content exclusions, SSO and audit logging, not just on paper.
How big should a pilot be?
One or two teams, typically 15 to 30 developers. That is large enough to measure and small enough to run with close support over 4 to 6 weeks.
What are agent workflows?
Agents take on defined tasks, not just code suggestions. Good first candidates are CI failure triage, merge and pull request review, dependency and security fixes, and test generation. We pick the ones where the return is easy to measure.
How much does it cost?
The Spend Review and the Governed Pilot are fixed fee. The Enterprise Rollout is scoped to your organization. Contact us for a quote.
Billing changes verified 1 October 2026 against GitHub’s Copilot billing documentation and announcement, and GitLab’s GitLab Credits documentation and pricing page. Vendor pricing and plan terms change often, so confirm current rates with us or the vendor before you budget. ReleaseTEAM is a GitLab Select Partner.
