Continuous Engineering, Continuous Delivery & DevOps
The term “Continuous Engineering” appears to have the ambition of becoming a buzzword, but hasn’t quite arrived. This may be because of its straightforward nature and possibly because similar terms exist, now and before. Whatever the forecast for its popularity, this blog seeks to define what Continues Engineering is, how it compares to “Continuous Delivery” and how it relates to the world of DevOps.
What Is Continuous Engineering?
Some define Continuous Engineering as speeding the delivery of increasingly sophisticated and inter-connected products by evolving engineering practices. Essentially, this amounts to continuous improvement – embodied in the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen (all the rage in the early 90s), but as applied specifically to engineering. This sounds good, but how does it relate to DevOps?
What is Continuous Delivery?
Jez Humble and David Farley literally wrote the book on Continuous Delivery, which is perhaps best defined by the book’s subtitle: “Reliable Software Releases through Build, Test, and Deployment Automation.”
Because rolling new software into production can be perilous and time-consuming, Continuous Delivery is a set of principles and technical practices that, “enable rapid, incremental delivery of high quality, valuable new functionality to users. Through automation of the build, deployment, and testing process, and improved collaboration between developers, testers, and operations, delivery teams can get changes released in a matter of hours—sometimes even minutes–no matter what the size of a project or the complexity of its code base.”
How Do Continuous Engineering & Continuous Delivery Relate to DevOps?
Continuous Engineering can be viewed as the overall philosophy with Continuous Delivery serving as the set of principles for software engineering. DevOps then represents the set of tools to achieve smooth and repeatable software rollouts.
ReleaseTEAM has extensive experience identifying the right set of DevOps tools – as well as continues engineering and delivery practices – for any software development and operations environment. If you’d like to sleep like a baby on the eve of software rollouts instead of wiping out the local supply of Tums, contact us today.

ReleaseTEAM Achieves Veteran-Owned Status
October 4, 2010
ReleaseTEAM, Inc., an IT solutions and staffing company, was recognized with Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) Status as of October 2010. ReleaseTEAM is currently registered with the General Service Administration and the Central Contractor Registration, the primary registrant databases for the U.S. Federal Government. ReleaseTEAM founders Shawn Doyle and Karl Todd both honorably served in the U.S. Army, providing grounds for this most recent business classification achievement.
ReleaseTEAM made the decision to register for VOSB certification in response to requests from federal contractors, and public and private businesses, who wanted to partner with diversity-credentialed vendors who could deliver quality IT services. ReleaseTEAM was happy to respond to these requests, and the designation has garnered tremendous positive feedback from clients.
"We're proud to be recognized as a Veteran-Owned Business (VOB)," states Shawn Doyle. "While we've always been a VOB, after 11 years we've finally taken the steps for verification. Now, ReleaseTEAM can better serve our clients that may have a requirement to work with minority-owned businesses or who want to honor the business efforts of Americans who have served in the armed forces."
By including minority-owned businesses among their vendors, corporations and government agencies demonstrate their commitment to fostering diversity and the continued development of their supplier/vendor diversity programs. The certification also offers a way for companies to extend their support to the military and the men and women who serve in it.

ClearCase and ClearQuest 7.1
April 29 2009
DENVER, CO - The Configuration Management Specialists at ReleaseTEAM, Inc. announced today that they have a tested and proven process to help software development teams upgrade to the IBM Rational 7.1 suite of tools. Through expert support and guidance, ReleaseTEAM provides its IBM Rational Certified consulting services to customers who require assistance with the 7.1 version upgrade.
The IBM Rational suite of tools now uses the installation tools and methodology common across IBM, the IBM Installation Manager. For IBM Rational Tools users, especially ClearCase and ClearQuest users, this means adopting a new technology and a significant change away from the familiar siteprep. ReleaseTEAM presented a comprehensive whitepaper at the Colorado Rational User's Group meeting, that describes the new process for an Enterprise deployment. This whitepaper as delivered is available at http://www.releaseteam.com/whitepapers/Installing_CC_CQ_71.pdf
"Software Development Teams using the IBM Rational application suite often require additional support to complete version upgrades." said Shawn Doyle, CEO of ReleaseTEAM. "We saw the level of difficulty associated with the 7.1 version upgrade, and devoted internal resources to develop an effective upgrade strategy. The 7.1 upgrade is not trivial, however, ReleaseTEAM has the experience and knowledge to make it go a lot smoother."
ReleaseTEAM Announces ClearConn Version 2.5 Accelerate information gathering with ClearConn
January 31, 2009
Westminster, CO - ReleaseTEAM, Inc. the Software Configuration Management specialists, has announced the release of the latest version of ClearConn. ClearConn 2.5 is a custom integration between IBM Rational's ClearCase and ClearQuest. ClearConn is an add-on application that allows for streamlined sharing of information between ClearCase and ClearQuest. ClearConn is an easy to install and configure utility that will provide speed and robustness that is superior to out of the box integration tools.
ClearConn is a two tier, client-server approach that both gathers relevant information and greatly reduces elapsed time at checkout, uncheckout and checkin operations. The client side of ClearConn gathers the ClearCase information it needs to store in ClearQuest and saves it as an attribute in ClearCase. The server side searches all of the designated ClearCase VOBs for the attribute and records the information in ClearQuest. ClearConn easily manages the integration of information from ClearCase VOBs to any ClearQuest database.
ClearConn has been developed using best practices learned from implementing custom integration solutions for IBM Rational's ClearCase and ClearQuest. Software development groups have many different requirements for integrations between source code control tools and change and defect tracking tools. ClearConn takes into account this wide variety of requirements, and is very configurable. ClearConn has been developed for high performance, ClearConn will not slow down ClearCase.
