May 2004 CRUG Meeting
Topic 1: Validating requirements with executable domain modelsSpeaker 1: Stu Stern
Stu Stern is the CEO of Gorilla Logic, a Broomfield-based, software startup he co-founded in 2002. Stu was Vice President of Sun's global Java consulting business, which Stu took from start-up in 1996 and grew to a global business across 25 countries. Stu has more than 20 years industry experience, including more than ten years on Wall Street, most recently as Vice President of Equity Trading Systems at PaineWebber. In this capacity, Stu was responsible for the software development and management of virtually all the IT systems on PaineWebber's equity trading floor including Nasdaq, Equity Derivatives, and Program Trading systems.
Stu will talk about "Validating requirements with executable domain models." The Meta Group claims that 60-70% of IT project failures are due to poor requirements gathering, analysis, and management. Stu will advocate using a functional prototype as a vehicle to validate functional requirements before any coding begins. In this process business users can "test drive" a real, complete working application prototype generated directly from a functional specification. Sitting side-by-side with an analyst, user feedback can be immediately incorporated into the domain model and the prototype then re-executed.

Cognence
How productive is your software engineering group? For most companies, this is a difficult question to answer. Most managers, however, would be shocked to learn that they are spending more money ensuring quality and fixing quality problems, than they are actually developing software! A concept born in the manufacturing industry called the ‘Cost of Quality’ is an effective tool in understanding where money is being spent on a software project. In this presentation, attendees will learn about the Cost of Quality Appraisal concept, how the results of an Appraisal can drive software engineering improvement activities, and how Rational’s best practices and integrated automation tools can help in tremendously lowering a company’s Cost of Quality, thus increasing overall productivity.
