Sun, 08 Mar 2009 @ 10:15 || Watchmen || Movies

Saw Watchmen yesterday. Great movie, I won't spoil it for folks who haven't seen it yet. I will talk about the music.

I liked the music. It was all stuff I listen to, most of it is on my mp3 player. Mindy mentioned it didn't seem to fit. I think I agree with her.

From what I recall here is the list of songs and roughly the scene they were in.

Song of Silence - Comedian Funeral
Have you ever seen the rain - cover - one of the bar scenes
Me and Bobby McGee - background music in a Vietnam bar
All along the watchtower - flight to Antarctica
Ride of the Valkyries - Vietnam flashback
Hallelujah - love scene
The Times They Are A-Changin - used during the beginning montage
You’re My Thrill - used during a rescue
I'm Your Boogie Man - background for a riot scene flashback

"Hallelujah" is the one I think was most misplaced. To me this song will be forever tied up with Shrek. Next Jimi Hendrix's version of "All along the watchtower" while I thought it sounded great, having it blast out of the theaters speakers during the owl's ships flight across the frozen ocean, didn't really feel like it made sense. The others didn't seem completely out of place, and the three songs, "the Sounds of Silence", "Ride of the Valkyries" and "The Times They Are A-Changin", were used in cliche type situations.

Sat, 20 Sep 2008 @ 14:15 || Movie reviews || Movies

Got a back log of reviews, as I didn't really feel like posting them. I'm at work babysitting the email cut over, giving me some time to do catch up on the reviews.

I'm guessing on Shane's reviews, I'll let him make modification in the comments.

The Office: Season4

Shawn:
Shane:

I had a hard time liking the office when it first came out. I became a fan once we rented Season 1 on DVD. We've been waiting a long time for Season 4 to come out and it hasn't disappointed.

The Pursuit of Happyness

Shawn:
Shane:

A good movie. We normally like more comedy, but this was very well done, an interesting story and not too preachy (which I was a little worried about).

Dave Attell's Insomniac Tour Uncensored!

Shawn:
Shane:

A good standup comedy DVD. It didn't have any tie ins to the Dave Attell's Insomniac TV show, so that was a little disappointing. I got yell at by Sukki for letting Mindy watch this, a lot of adult humor.

10,000 B.C.

Shawn:
Shane:

I had been waiting to see this movie since it was in theaters. Shane didn't want to see it as he said it got bad reviews. I liked it, but it did seem like it would be better as a Doctor Who or SG1 episode. The story was good, the special effect and visuals were great. The characters were a little weak, it was hard to tell them apart and you never really bought into them.

The Muppet Show: Season 3

Shawn:
Shane:

I'm not sure why I just don't buy these. You almost can't go wrong with the Muppets. (except for Muppets in Oz..yuck)

Reno 911!: Miami

Shawn:
Shane:

Not a very good movie. But we enjoyed it for it's campiness. The Reno 911 folks are damn good.

F**k

Shawn:
Shane:

Not exactly what I expected out of the documentary. Not sure what I expected. Was pretty much interviews of celebrities, like the I love the 70s series on VH1, asking them about the word fuck.

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear

Shawn:
Shane:

It wasn't terrible, but not sure I'd ever watch it again. A cheap after school movie for young teenagers that kinda stole from the Indiana Jones and StarGate films.

Babel

Shawn:
Shane:

Too artsy and preachy for our taste.

The Bourne Ultimatum

Shawn:
Shane:

We're not big action fans, but this was pretty good, and better than the second one.

Charlotte's Web

Shawn:
Shane:

Stayed true to the book, but aimed at kids. I was hoping the Movie would have taken some artistic rights and cooked the pig.

Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train

Shawn:
Shane:

Way too preachy without actually having a point. At first they stayed on more of a biography style then they kinda switched back and forth warning us of annoying government crap.

Airplane!

Shawn:
Shane:

One of the best movies of all time

Gilbert Gottfried: Dirty Jokes

Shawn:
Shane:

A DVD of Gilbert's standup. The extra features were pretty good. Was kinda short.

The Bourne Supremacy

Shawn:
Shane:

Not as good as the first and third movies, but ok.

Reno 911!: Reno's Most Wanted: Uncensored

Shawn:
Shane:

Was ok, not really uncensored. Was random episodes from the first 3 seasons.

Terrorstorm: A History of Government Sponsored Terrorism

Shawn:
Shane:

Pretty much a radio talk show from Texas and his theory about 911 being an inside job. He made some interesting points, but didn't go too deep on them. The title is a little misleading, the "History" part is a 5min or so slide show at the start of the movie. It would have been better if he went into more depth.

Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers

Shawn:
Shane:

A documentary on how the Government is making it's buddies rich while screwing over the troops, taxpayers and Iraqis. Got a little preachy and was shallow on some of the claims.

Sun, 17 Aug 2008 @ 15:58 || Movie backlog || Movies

Been a while since I've rated the movies we've watched. Not that we haven't been watching any, just haven't felt like rating them till now.

On DVD..

Baby Snakes - Frank Zappa

Shawn:
Shane:

I was expecting this to be weird with a lot of good music. I thought it was boring with very little music. It was pretty weird, but more of a disturbing than funny way. Shane watched more of it than I did, as I found other things to do around the house after an hour and a half of it.

Eric Idle's Personal Best

Shawn:
Shane:

Clips from Monty Python. Was very good, the intro wasn't that well done, not sure if Eric Idle wrote it or just agreed to act in it. Could have used more special features.

For Your Consideration

Shawn:
Shane:

Wasn't as funny as I had hoped. Shane rates it two treasures for Fred Willards performance.

The Looney Tunes Golden Collection

Shawn:
Shane:

These were really well restored and the special features were great. I had expected them to be in chronologic order. We've seen the first 3 DVDs. The first one was all Bugs, then second was a mix of Daffy and Porky and the third was all mixed. So far there hasn't been a Foghorn Leghorn, but I think we've seen at least one of all the major characters.

Hellboy: The sword of storms

Shawn:
Shane:

This was enjoyable. I like the Hellboy characters, even tho I've never read the comics. It got boring toward the end where it seemed to wrap up a little too conveniently.

Funny Money

Shawn:
Shane:

A Chevy Chase movie I'd never heard of. I really should avoid these. While it had a lot of little funny moments, it was more frustrating to watch than anything else. It was too predictable and a little too stupid. Too much of it was over the top and not believable even for a comedy.

Fast Food Nation

Shawn:
Shane:

This wasn't really even a clever movie. We get it, butchering cows is gross, illegal immigrants get screwed over. This movie spend 45 minutes getting us interested in characters that never did anything. The last part of the movie was just preachy and gross.

Stranger than Fiction

Shawn:
Shane:

Good movie but not great. Funny concept but a little long.

God, the Universe and Everything Else

Shawn:
Shane:

It was very interesting. I didn't realize how old the recording was, this was a recording of a 1988 BBC talk show. The guests were amazing, but the host never really engaged them. It was very dry and hard to sit thru, luckily it was only 50 minutes long.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Secret Agent, Super Dragon

Shawn:
Shane:

MST3K never really disappoints. This was a pretty solid episode.

Sun, 03 Aug 2008 @ 18:26 || More Movies || Movies

Yesterday we went to see Hell Boy II, electric bugaloo.

Hell Boy II

Shawn:
Shane:

We both don't remember the first movie that well. Probably should have rented it before seeing this one. Overall we both liked it, and thought it was very well done. Not remembering what happened in the first movie didn't seem to matter much.

On DVD

Idiocracy

Shawn:
Shane:

A funny movie from the maker of Bevis and Butthead and King of the Hill. If it had a decent budget this could have been a summer blockbuster, better editing, a more polished script and better effects. Since it was done on a modest budget it only gets 3 treasures. Still a good movie.

Stargate SG1: Continuum

Shawn:
Shane:

A very enjoyable dvd for Stargate fans. If you haven't followed the series it will be confusing and probably boring. Richard Dean Anderson returns as Jack O'Neil and really makes this dvd, his part is not as integral to the story line as I would have liked. I would have only given it 3 treasures, but it involved Time Travel.

Sat, 02 Aug 2008 @ 10:23 || DVD review || Movies

Last night between watching the Soup and Stargate Atlantis We somehow fit this movie in.

Accepted

Shawn:
Shane:

While a funny premise, this was a few jokes tied together with a ton of montages. Since I'm a fan of the 80's style montage, I gave it 2 treasures. Shane's rating is based on Lewis Black's cameo appearances.

Mon, 28 Jul 2008 @ 20:22 || Weekend DVDs || Movies

Watched 3 DVDs this weekend.

Jesus Camp

Shawn:
Shane:

A documentary about evangelicals Christians. While it was eye opening, and kinda scary, I didn't think it was sarcastic enough.

MST3K: The Rebel Set

Shawn:
Shane:

All MST3Ks are pretty good. This one actually had a movie that was worth watching and the added commentary just made it better. It had an additional short that we both thought we've seen before.

24: Season 6 - Disk 2

Shawn:
Shane:

Finished the second DVD of the sixth season. Still pretty good.

Mon, 21 Jul 2008 @ 21:39 || Weekend DVDs || Movies

Watched 3 DVDs this weekend. Not sure when we had the time, as I was in the office fighting with a windows server.

Flags of our Fathers

Shawn:
Shane:

This was the first of Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima movies. We had watched "Letters from Iwo Jima" a while ago. Maybe watching them out of order warped our judgment, but we didn't care for this movie. It had no coherent story, it jumped around in time way too much and was pretty boring at times.

Batman: Gotham Knight

Shawn:
Shane:

This was a series of animated stories. Overall, not that exciting and the different graphic styles were interesting. It gets 3 treasures, because hey, it's Batman.

24: Season 6 - Disk 1

Shawn:
Shane:

Jack Bauer could almost be Batman. However Batman could kick his ass, but hey, he's Batman. So far this season looks good. Lots of new actors in CTU, most will probably die if seasons 1-5 taught us anything. The cliff hanger at the end of this DVD was very good and I can't wait for the next DVD.

Mon, 21 Jul 2008 @ 17:23 || Batman || Movies

Saw Batman today. Went into work and nothing was happening, the weekend was very stressful, so I took the afternoon off.

The Dark Knight

Shawn:
Shane:

My only complaints; the movie was a little long, and some kid was kicking the back of my chair. This was a great movie, a must see for all normal people. For non-normals, who don't like Batman, go see that abba movie.

Wed, 16 Jul 2008 @ 22:29 || Borat || Movies

Watched this on DVD tonight.

Borat

Shawn:
Shane:

While funny, it wore thin after a while. There were a few scenes that had us laughing out loud, I can't recall what they were. I'd recommend this if you want to be semi-entertained and kill a hour and a half.

Tue, 15 Jul 2008 @ 22:33 || Tideland || Movies

Monday was a late night at work. Had a board meeting at 5:00 that lasted till about 7ish.

When I got home, Shane and I watched Tideland, Terry Gilliam directed.

Tideland

Shawn:
Shane:

I actually stopped watching with about 1/2 an hour left. Terry warned us that we might not like the movie. It was a little disturbing and the pace was a slow, so I gave up on it and went to bed. Shane finished it and said it got a little better towards the end, and had a good ending.

Sun, 13 Jul 2008 @ 22:26 || Movies || Movies

We watch a ton of movies. So it's probably about time I started doing very bad reviews. For now we'll rate via the treasure measure, as it's kinda pirate related, and who doesn't like pirates? I'm not sure if 5 or 10 treasures is the top now.. lets say 5 and I'll adjust it depending on how good Batman is in a few weeks.

Today, Shane and I watched 3 movies, 1 in the theaters and 2 on DVD. We caught the 11:15 showing of Hancock. A superhero movie with the fresh prince.

Hancock

Shawn:
Shane:

While I enjoyed it and didn't see the twist coming at all. Shane said it was enjoyable but forgettable.

The first of the two movies we watched on DVD was the Covenant. This was supposta be a witch movie set in Ipswitch, where one of my grandfathers grew up, which is close to Salem and Gloucester, MA, both places I've lived.

Covenant

Shawn:
Shane:

This movie sucked. The acting was bad, I couldn't tell the characters apart. the story didn't exist and it's unclear if it there was a director. If you are going to have a warlock fight sceene, give the warlocks better powers than throwing bubbles at each other. It was kinda neat to see a few shots of places I recognized, but otherwise this was hard to sit thru.

The second movie was Hollywood Knights, an teenage 80's flick that was recommended via the Netfix suggestion mechanism, which I am no longer listening to.

Hollywood Knights

Shawn:
Shane:

I'm giving it two treasures, for the cars and the music. Shane hated it and I'm not sure he'd even give it one treasure. If I need a fix for a 80's teen movie, I'm going to stick with Porky's.

On Saturday we finished up the last DVD of 24 season 5.

24 season 5

Shawn:
Shane:

While not the best season we've seen so far, we both enjoyed it. I specially liked hating the president... worst president ever! Shane also pointed out that Jack always says "Do what you have to" to whoever is about to get in trouble for helping Jack out. Might be the start of a drinking game in that.

We also watched Knocked up. A comedy with some guy that looked familiar and a hot blond. While a lot of it took place at the E! studios, Joel McHale never made an appearance.

Knocked up

Shawn:
Shane:

If Joel or better yet Tommy or Mankini were in this, it would have gotten 5 treasures or maybe even more! Over all a good funny movie.
